Just to follow up on both of those specific instances, the Surface came two years after the iPad, and retina display technology in 2010, as quoted "approached the limit of pixel visibility to the human eye". In both cases, Apple was a leader. Without those two entries, you've got "other tablets were later brought to market" and "displays continued at an incremental improvement in quality".

Apple Watch also wasn’t the first wristwatch computer but it got a mention as well. Seems like a trend on the whole piece. Then there’s the G5, which the history notes was “ hailed as the first true 64-bit personal computer.” That toes the Apple marketing line at the time precisely, but there was plenty of 64-bit hardware available before the G5 came out. Windows XP 64 bit edition was released prior, while OSX hardly even supported 64bit computing when the G5 was released. It was pure marketing hype.
