After living in Amsterdam for about a year I can definitely say leasing bikes makes far more sense than owning. Less hassle, less worry regarding maintenance and in certain cases far less worry about your bike being stolen or having to deal with the fallout.
I'm surprised someone hasn't created the killer "lease combo" of "unlimited charging" at certain charging stations coupled with a bike lease.
Having lived in America before, even in cities like New York - I vastly prefer a bike + transit system than solely a subway and poor bus infrastructure.
Driving is such a wasteful activity but unfortunately the way cities are designed is sort of integral to whether or not getting around by car or bike makes sense. Have to mention the NL climate is also nearly perfect - forget trying to "bike" anywhere somewhere like Austin most of the year (even if they actually had bike lanes / paths everywhere). Also, biking in the dead of winter is something I'd never do - know too many people who've gotten concussions from ice.
