Remote working may be a win-win for employers, employees and – even the economy
- tomcam 4y agoI take economic analysis from NPR every bit as seriously as I take broadcasting analysis from the Fortune 50
- faeriechangling 4y agoI’m interested to hear your beef with Greg Rosalsky because I do listen to his work as he’s part of the most popular economics podcast in the world, Planet Money. I’m not expecting super rigorous cutting edge economics from NPR but I do actually expect a well informed conventional take on economics. Who should people listen to? NPRs level of competence in economics already far outstrips mine.
- tomcam 4y agoHe’s a smart guy. Planet Money is entertaining. I take my economic education from people with skin in the game, and who make their agendas clear. BTW is it your contention that NPR is a vigorous defender of free markets?
- faeriechangling 4y agoYes? I think it might be more precise to say they support mixed markets than free markets. I think they'll entertain some more left wing ideas like UBI, but their ideology is fundamentally market based. NPR I know for two reasons, they're one of the American news organisations pushing for the Iraq war the absolute least, and their economic stuff. I keep hearing how NPR is filled with deranged bash the fash marxists but I actually have never actually seen these people. Maybe their columns aren't as popular as the more mainstream columns at NPR.
- tomcam 4y agoI genuinely appreciate your thoughtfulness and this discourse. My view of NPR is so different from yours I don’t think we could have a productive conversation here, but I’m not kidding when I say I love the fact that you pursued it so civilly. Thank you. My contact information is in my profile and if you ever visited the Seattle area I would be only too happy to buy you lunch and discuss these matters in a friendly environment.
- Zacharias030 4y agoIn summary, we have heard a few reasonable arguments for why NPR is fairly decent and a few unsubstained rhethorical questions and a very civil withdrawal from the other side. Are you sure your beliefs about NPR / free markets are falsifiable? What would convince you to change your mind on NPR?
- tomcam 4y ago> I don’t think we could have a productive conversation here
- powerapple 4y agoGood or bad, I thought the pandemic was going to change the world a lot, changing the whole economy, city and how people live. I have imagined people moving out of city, work remotely, more space available because you don't need an office, housing price drop because people moving out of city. But no, nothing changed except a lot people lost money and a few made a lot money.
- faeriechangling 4y agoI’ve seen the work remotely part stay true and I feel like 5 day a week commutes for white collar workers will go extinct. It’s just too wasteful of an institution to perpetuate itself forever.
- powerapple 4y agoThe trend is there, but the progress is not good enough. US is ahead of everyone else on this. The real need for this to happen is in developing world. Imaging they don't have to build expensive cities, people can save time commuting, they don't have to do something and correct it in the future, how much resources are going to save.
- Am4TIfIsER0ppos 4y ago> a lot people lost money and a few made a lot money That was the whole point of the government reaction to it.
- Zacharias030 4y agoHow does HN make a hybrid setup work great with meetings where some people join remotely and others are in the office? My supervisor now insists on taking meetings via zoom (on his own) if anyone is not in the office even though half of the team is there and conference video tech is available, which I find super uncourteous and super draining. He says he doesn’t see a difference between meetings in person and online, beyond „socializing“ or „hanging out with you“.

- NonNefarious 4y agoIt's "win/win," FYI.
- villgax 4y agoFreelancers & OG remote workers have been doing this for decades especially if you consider consider outsourced work or timezones of different offices. Just that now it's happening within the same city/country is all.
- mbfg 4y agoone would assume substantial remote work would be slightly better for the planet, as well.
