A Letter to the New Yorker
- eternalban 4y agofrom the source: "On September 24, 2022, the New Yorker published an article by Dexter Filkins titled “The Exiled Dissident Fueling the Hijab Protests in Iran.” In the article, Ms. Masih Alinejad, an Iranian dissident based in New York, claimed that “[she is] leading this movement” for gender equality and democratic freedoms. The article falsely argues that “Iran was brought to this point” by Masih Alinejad and inaccurately credits her claim that she is single-handedly leading this feminist uprising. The hundreds of women who risk their lives every day in the face of state violence to gain their rights and achieve justice are simply supposed to be her followers. We were surprised by this inaccurate and invalid statement that was given such prominence on your website. It is vital to bring your attention to some important facts that situate the current uprising of Iranian women in its historical context. ... "We implore the New Yorker to return to publishing serious research and give credit to the real activists. We demand they take down this premature, poorly researched, and highly inaccurate article. We demand that, rather than aiding the co-optation of the movement by opportunists and disingenuous governments, accurate narratives of Iran’s grassroots, broad-based revolutionary feminist movement are published."
