- boxed 4y agoBesides them inventing the modern smart phone and revolutionizing an industry? What did the romans ever do for US? :P
- smoldesu 4y agoAll Apple did is commodify the industry, and that business model has proven to be successful for them (same as it was with the iPod). At the end of the day, Apple's contributions to technology aren't chivalric acts of kindness. Their ultimate goal is the same as everyone, running a rent collection business and relying on their services to make consistent income. That's what I think we need to fix. Apple can continue to make phones, we just need to separate their services (the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV, Podcasts, etc.) from their hardware business. If they did that, I might actually buy a Mac again!
- scarface74 4y agoA commodity is something by definition that is easily substitutable and you have to compete on price. Apple products are anything but a “commodity”. This is kinda Econ 101.
- wombat-man 4y agoThe iPod and the iPhone both felt like big steps at the time. For both of those categories Apple led by example and basically forced everyone to try to fit their example.
- boxed 4y ago> All Apple did is commodify the industry No. Look at what high end "smartphones" looked like before the iPhone. It's a DRAMATIC shift. > At the end of the day, Apple's contributions to technology aren't chivalric acts of kindness. What? No one claimed that. The romans didn't build aqueducts and roads because they were nice either. But that's totally irrelevant.
- norin 4y agothey gave us Nokia
- norin 4y agoNokia?
- pGuitar 4y agoThey did start the phones as we know them today.... but better Android ones with slide out keyboards came out soon after
- thiht 4y ago> better Android ones with slide out keyboards That's the weirdest thing I've read in a while. No one cares about that.
- pGuitar 4y agoyeah because companies are trying to save money and got rid of them before most people had a cellphone (so they don't know what they are missing)
- boxed 4y agoWhat people want: 1. more screen 2. smaller phone (unless it contradicts rule 1) 3. longer battery life (unless it contradicts rule 1 or 2) It's really that simple. Apple fought against this a long time before they gave up and realized the truth. They shipped smaller phones long after Android had moved on to larger screens.
