Wouldn't be enough to have the "private" data encrypted on the hard disk? Unless you are sending your laptop to repair to the NSA, your data should be safe.

- aborsy 4y agoAnd if I send my laptop for repair to NSA with private data encrypted with a secret key not on laptop, how will NSA decrypt my data?
- jaclaz 4y agoYes, of course, the problem is that it is not easy (IMHO) because of the lack a clear division between data and OS. I mean, if you decide to encrypt the whole disk (like bitlocker or similar) you will need to provide the password/key to the repair shop or they might not be able otherwise to test that it is fully functional, if you have all your data on a separate volume you may well encrypt that volume only, but lots of possibly "private" data is anyway scattered on the OS volume.
