Tim Cook: 'No good excuse' for lack of women in tech
- incomingpain 4y agoWhen I was in highschool there were no women in tech. In post-secondary there was literally 1 woman. The 'good excuse' is that women decide before high school they don't want to be in tech. Is it society's fault for pushing women out of tech? Absolutely.
- photochemsyn 4y agoI don't understand what Tim Cook is talking about - it may be the case that a majority of tech workers are women, and this includes Apple's own far-flung global workforce. For example, let's look at Apple's Foxconn workers (Jan 2022): > "More than 85 percent of the 17,000 employees at the plant are women, mostly temporary hands, according to the workers and activists The Quint spoke with. Almost all are 25 or younger, and landed there through local middlemen..." Listen to this heartwarming personal story that reveals just how much Apple cares about women in the tech world! > "With an education loan to repay and a family with no earner, she took up a job at Foxconn’s iPhone factory. One that paid so less that she would need more than a year’s salary to buy the Apple Inc. phone she assembled." https://www.thequint.com/news/business/foxconn-reopens-tamil-nadu-sriperumbudur-factory-women-dont-want-to-return-food-poisoning-apple https://www.thequint.com/news/business/foxconn-reopens-tamil... Of course, the excuse for that kind of thing is inflated profit margins obtained via decreased labor costs, which is why Apple won't build it's pricey phones in Silicon Valley itself, preferring Third World sweatshops.
