I even hide the menu bar on my Mac so every window always is as fullscreen as a window can be and I have never looked back. When I want someting from the menubar I need to move the mouse there anyways.
The only nitpick is, when having an external monitor set to be above the MacBook's one, simply jamming your mouse up to the top won't reveal the menubar as easy and you need to move it exactly to the screen top. Also I don't know how that approach would work with the new MacBooks with a notch.
