Stop parking apps from exposing your location
- fyvhbhn 4y agoOnly works if you park legally though
- hksoftware 4y agoYou didn't ready the whitepaper, did you.
- jerpint 4y agoI wonder what the solution will be in north america
- arbitrage 4y agoThere will not be one. Obviously.
- sp332 4y agoWell, a couple of states and cities have already banned it. There seems to be some momentum.
- jrochkind1 4y ago> In 2014, Arkansas banned the collection of license plate data by private entities while allowing law enforcement to continue using the technology. DRN pushed back, saying the law violates their First Amendment rights. DRN also contested a Utah law that banned private collection; the company dropped the suit after the state amended that law. — https://www.vice.com/en/article/ne879z/i-tracked-someone-with-license-plate-readers-drn https://www.vice.com/en/article/ne879z/i-tracked-someone-wit...
- Overtonwindow 4y agoOne of my neighbors has a camera set up to record license plates that pass by his house.
- speedgoose 4y agoIs it legal where you live?
- ethbr0 4y agoI'm sure it depends on state, but as a rule, anything on a public surface (e.g. road, sidewalk, park) can be freely photographed by anyone.
- bierjunge 4y agoPhotographing public space is somehow different from monitoring it with a camera 24/7. Here in Germany, installing a camera which also captures the sidewalk next to your property or a part of your neighbors property would be illegal.
- pc86 4y agoIsn't Germany the exception even among the EU in terms of how strict they are with privacy?
- dymk 4y agoIs it not where you live?
- speedgoose 4y agoNo, you can’t have a camera to film the public space without an authorisation.
- sschueller 4y agoYou can in the United States. In Switzerland and some other European countries you can not and you need to post signage anywhere you have cameras on your private property. I am currently installing cameras and it's difficult because I can't mount it on the house facing out.
- greenthrow 4y agoAlready being discussed currently: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32980040 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32980040
- 300bps 4y agoIt took me a decent amount of reading before I got to the meat of it: Anyone can put your license plate into a parking app and thereby be alerted when you drive to certain parking locations.
- 7steps2much 4y agoYes, it's one of the classic trade-offs, comfort vs security.
- djbebs 4y agoThe problem is the existence of license plates.
- pc86 4y agoWhy is that?
- mikece 4y agoIt wouldn't surprise me to learn that there's a national security (or the EU equivalent) exception to the gathering of license plate data even by non-government entities.
