There shouldn't just be a volume setting
I'm tired of fighting the TV shows and movies I'm watching. Constantly turning them down when they're too loud and down up when they're too quite.
There should be a max volume setting/button and a min volume setting/button. The sound of any given piece of media should be normalised such that it fits within your desired range.
May also need a cut off volume to deal with static being amplified to your minimum.
There may be a more clever way of dealing with this and other associated issues. Neural Nets?
Just felt like I needed to put this idea out in the world.
EDIT: I know this already exists.
I'm saying it should be as common as our current method of volume.
- themodelplumber 4y agoYou can do this with existing audio equipment. Warning: You may become an audio engineer along the way. It can be very addicting to learn about this kind of thing and then realize what you can do.
- billyESV 4y agoI'm sure all of these things exist. I didn't think for a second that I'm the first person to think of this sort of thing. I'm saying it should be as standard as the current volume buttons/settings are on our phones, our YouTube videos, our TVs
- sp332 4y agoYour TV or receiver might already have a "night mode", that compresses the volume levels and makes things more even.
- uuoc 4y agoNote: quite adverb \ ˈkwīt How to pronounce quite (audio) \ Definition of quite 1 : wholly, completely not quite finished 2 : to an extreme : positively quite sure —often used as an intensifier with a quite a swell guyquite a beauty 3 : to a considerable extent : rather quite near The word you are looking for is "quiet".

- fxtentacle 4y agoIn my experience, Atmos audio tracks are especially offensive. So I usually use ffmpeg to mix them down to stereo while boosting center = dialogue a bit. ffmpeg can also do dynamic range compression for you, BTW: https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#compand https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#compand
- behnamoh 4y agois there anything ffmpeg CAN’T do?
- duped 4y agoSpend more time and money on your home theater sound and this problem goes away
- rasz 4y ago1 Download to the hard drive. 2 Use mplayer/mpv with volume normalization.
