Pat: Eliminating CAPTCHAs on iPhones and Macs with open standards
- josephcsible 4y agoThis feels like a net loss for both privacy and freedom. It's giving Apple way too much power and too many special privileges. The rule of thumb for things like this should be "would this be feasible on 100% open source hardware?".
- vicegold 4y agoDid you read the article? It‘s based on privacy pass protocol, and Apple is just the first major vendor to support them on OS level. https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-ietf-privacypass-auth-scheme-01.html https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-ietf-privacypass-auth-...
- josephcsible 4y agoYes, and these are the specific points that concern me: > the Attester is Apple, the device vendor > The Apple attester will check various device components, confirm they are valid
- yakubin 4y agoWhat do bot-prevention mechanisms like that mean for crawlers, such as Google bot, or apps such as Discord trying to get titles of pages linked in chats? Are websites enabling such functionality less searchable? In my experience Vultr website keeps nagging me to solve captchas on Linux (but not Mac or Windows), but they still seem to show up in search results.
