The answer to environmental problems can't be leaving quality of life on the table. If you leave a vacuum other people are gonna fill that vacuum . India and China would consider a huge success a scenario in which climate gets worse but there is a reversal in the quality of life metrics: that is Europe and US becoming second world and them taking the spot of first world.
A comment such as yours can only be produced by an overtly concerned American or European who is not aware that if you stop fighting for quality of life it's gonna be taken away from you. Then you'll have the worst of both worlds: Low quality of life and climate change still unsolved.
It is a huge dichotomy to fight for freedom in Ukraine and then lose the fight for quality of life at home, all because John Kerry and Al Gore tell you to stop being a proud American. These are the same people that don't believe in American exceptionalism and want to destroy NATO so that the West is vulnerable to attacks from India, Russia and China.
- paulcole 4y agoI’m an American and (for environmental consciousness and personal preference), I’ve chosen a “low quality of life” compared to what many wealthy Americans believe is a high quality of life: I don’t eat meat, I don’t drive, I don’t fly in planes, I don’t have children, and I live in a small apartment. I have no doubt that climate change will remain unsolved.
- Bubble_Pop_22 4y agoThe West limiting itself will only destroy our mental health and creativity in a moment where both are needed the most to fight old enemies such as Russia, China, India etc. But also to fight new enemies such as climate change. There is a reason why monks don't come up with world-changing inventions. Necessity is the mother of invention after all. We invent stuff to keep improving our quality of life, that is a complete different approach than regressing and limiting ourselves which has never worked and never will.
- paulcole 4y agoMonks also didn’t totally fuck up the climate. I really don’t think it matters how any of us live. When it comes to climate change, we went ham with our credit card. Now we’re just waiting for the bill to come due knowing we don’t have the money to pay it.
