This touches on some points which should be emphasized:
1) Conceiving of management as stewardship of both the organization and one's colleagues is revolutionary to most organizational cultures. Many places embody some form of this, but to really practice management as service to others (in a work context) is rare and good.
2) In order to function well over time, organizations need to provide an advancement path which is parallel to management. Otherwise it's impossible to both retain/develop existing senior talent and select for functioning managers.
3) Corollary to the footnote about the limits of formal power, good org structures should also accommodate informal power centers. There are always consensus holders and thought leaders outside the formal hierarchy (many of whom hold their status by function of being outside) who can be invited to meaningfully contribute to the mission but have been historically disallowed.
