Understanding why our ancestors were stuck in poverty
- goatsneez 4y agoThis is, unfortunately (as this is a respectable datasite), a mother of improper data analysis. The story that is woven together over such a large time frame over which number of socio-politico-economic shifts happened do not inform what so ever the conclusion squeezed out this dataset. The economies of countries of 1200, 1600, 2000, and 2022 along with the inter-networking relationships, dominance of petro-dollar with many latent variables render this approach useless toward thinking about such matters.
- incomingpain 4y agoThe wonderful thing about this is how much it still shapes people's minds and politics. There's often a clear division of people who still live in this malthusian mindset. When productivity boomed during the industrial revolution we shifted from a scarcity situation to an abundance. That's not to say we are post-scarcity, recycling is still important. Look up 'abundance mindset' if you want to know more. We are living in a time right now where there is technically unlimited food. We could build a highly insulated factory with growlights in the arctic or worst desert and be producing food with robotic arms mounted to vehicles all automatically. Providing cheap renewable food at tremendously low cost in places without food. In practical reality there's amortization costs and all this to get it built and running. Time, labour etc. These are being built right now and these are operating right now. We will get to a point in the future where you go grocery shopping and food is a loss leader to bring you to the store. They just give the food away. You know such a thing would be great for society, it's coming.
- inphovore 4y agoOil. You owe credit for your civilization to oil. One gallon of oil contains approximately one thousand man hours of energy potential. Add up the oil used in the production, acquisition, and maintenance of everything you depend upon, and consider the equivalent army of servants necessary in procuring these things on your behalf.
