Ergh, MPEG1 Layer 1. At least DAT’s (the “competitor”) have full PCM support.
Given CPU power of the day PCM should be easier to decode, just the excessive bandwidth (for the time) would be the expensive part to deal with.
- PaulHoule 4y agoYou could not get high enough bandwidth on a compact cassette without helical recording which would require a big change into the cartridge to support PCM. DCC demoed bad against Minidisc because Minidisc could seek quickly from one track to the next while the DCC takes minutes to fast-forward.
