Google Is Showing Ads to Sell Your Kidney for $1M in India
- renewiltord 4y agoAppears to be an advance fee scam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam You supposedly deposit some money for the surgery and then they'll give you the proceeds of the kidney sale. No actual organ transplant occurs and you go home poorer the advance fee. Personally, I think it is a bit unconscionable that a transplant can cost $700k+ in the US and while everyone makes money off the operation, the person supplying the crucial part, the organ they may have spent decades creating and caring for, that person finds themselves as the only person without any money. A sufficiently regulated organ trade is fairly essential, I think, to the future of transplant surgery.
- sgjohnson 4y agoThe scam itself is totally irrelevant. The problem is with Google facilitating it.
- wyager 4y agoAnyone know the actual going rate for a decent kidney?
- afandian 4y agoGoogle shows me ads that tell me to put coke in my fuel tank and forks in mains electricity sockets. Who knows why, I never click. And the reporting functionality is deliberately obstructive (if you can make Street View you can let me flag an illegal ad). But at this point Google can’t pretend that they don’t know what they’re profiting from.
- candiodari 4y agoSame as the <blink> tag used to be used. You attract attention by showing something designed to be irritating. Obvious serious or dangerous mistakes are known to be irritating and attract attention, and clearly that works.
- afandian 4y agoI found some screenshots of said ads. I was annoyed enough to screenshot these but not click: https://imgur.com/a/K9xkXKY https://imgur.com/a/K9xkXKY
- weatherlight 4y ago15 years ago, you could buy quasi-legal "Research Chemicals," i.e. Psychedelics in/on google ads. I guess somethings don't change?
