AMD and Intel Say PC Demand Is ‘Getting Worse.’
- sylware 4y agoThere are nearly no games to use properly the lastest hardware. Many dev studios scale for consoles, which are small PCs (or worse, look at the switch), and they can code straight for the hardware which can reach, _perceptually_, big PC quality. I am waiting for a simple ABI (à la ELF, but _tight_ and _simple_) for assembly written GPU programs (ofc, an ABI is hardware vendor specific). Many ppl do not care, their "big" screen smart phone is "enough". For the consumer, one of the main _HONEST_ incentives (planned obsolescence is not one of them, btw the law should do something about this) to buy new PC hardware is to play to magnificient games. If a 2022 game looks _hardly_ better than a 2015 game... in the world of today internet, the only way to push that to the ppl is because there is nothing else (like 99% of the "streaming services" series). The "eat trash" because there is only trash available. And yes, big magnificient games are cumulated +5 years of dev (or a decade of continuous dev with "episode" releases every 2/3 years) with a cumulated +half a billion of $/€ (reddead redemption 2/horizon episodes/god of war/etc). You can still have small magnificient games though, but you would need A LOT of them to satisfy the thirst of the ppl (or it is dota2/csgo/etc). And often where there is quantity, the quality is often not really around. Well, it is a complex matter and the previous points are just what I could think of. With proper games, GPUs will continue to scale up until transistors can shrink and dies can grow (and the power plants can supply electricity to those chips, which is supposed to be orders of magnitude less than heating/AC or car battery charging).
