- toomuchtodo 4y agoRooftop solar has a lot of soft costs and won’t decline as rapidly in cost as utility scale, where you’re just slapping panels on racking on the ground.
- laurencerowe 4y agoIt's time we killed the subsidies for rooftop scale solar. They made sense when panels were far more expensive but now the 30% federal subsidies for rooftop solar would pay outright for the same amount of utility scale capacity.
- toomuchtodo 4y agoNah, rooftop solar reduces transmission infra costs and keeps utilities in check. If all the subsidies went to utility scale, utilities could more easily hold consumers hostage (looking at you Florida and Arizona, specifically). Consider the residential rooftop premium a system resiliency tax.
- laurencerowe 4y agoTransmission costs account for less than 5% of electricity prices. The subsidies are now just another way the US tax code favours home owners at the expense of apartment renters.
