I too recently started with Ubuntu. For me works best learning-by-doing. First I learned a lot during the installation itself. Then I read few articles explaining the file/directory structure. Now I started slowly installing tools, and learn commands in the process. While reading a books is nice definitely, for me it would rather hinder me, then help. This is because I will concentrate too much on the book instead of actually doing something on the Linux machine. The only thing I see personally needing reading a book is learning Bash.
