Do I need to read a book to learn to use Linux?
I was reading askubuntu answers and everyone was like "just read online and ask help online". I did that for 1 month and what I've realized is that I am memorizing solutions rather than understanding them.
But I also realize that there'll be no books about ubuntu because they get outdated fast.
So, someone in linux forum recommended me this book.

can you recommend some good books about linux that will help me to use linux as a desktop use firstly.
- pr07ecH70r 4y agoI too recently started with Ubuntu. For me works best learning-by-doing. First I learned a lot during the installation itself. Then I read few articles explaining the file/directory structure. Now I started slowly installing tools, and learn commands in the process. While reading a books is nice definitely, for me it would rather hinder me, then help. This is because I will concentrate too much on the book instead of actually doing something on the Linux machine. The only thing I see personally needing reading a book is learning Bash.
- nf-x 4y agoIn the end, you’ll end up using approx 20 commands. Maybe reading a book is worth it. For me it was. I could recommend two: https://www.amazon.com/Power-Tools-Third-Shelley-Powers/dp/0596003307 https://www.amazon.com/Power-Tools-Third-Shelley-Powers/dp/0... (old but gold) https://www.amazon.com/UNIX-Linux-System-Administration-Handbook/dp/0134277554 https://www.amazon.com/UNIX-Linux-System-Administration-Hand...
- lupo_on_hn 4y agoTo get used to the basics, I would recommend that you ask an other Linux user to teach you, in "real life" and in person. With this knowledge, learning from a book will be more enjoyable. The "computer culture" was started by people for which sharing knowledge was its main ideal, and it should be like that today. (Is there a "Linux User Group" in your area?)
- pcdoodle 4y agoI'd recommend the bible, it's less arcane.
- brudgers 4y agoDesign of the Unix Operating System https://archive.org/download/DesignOfTheUnixOperatingSystemByMauriceBach/Design%20of%20the%20Unix%20Operating%20System%20By%20Maurice%20Bach.pdf https://archive.org/download/DesignOfTheUnixOperatingSystemB... It is the high level bit for understanding Linux (and Unix). Good luck.
