They are countering violent extremist groups that are using the internet to access a larger audience, basically not letting them to freely spread their messages.
If one of those groups for example would make a propaganda video about killing transsexual people and that video would reach the home page of Youtube it would cause a lot of harm. You don't want to give such voices representation, you would eventually make the behavior they represent socially acceptable.
- bequanna 4y agoThis oft repeated reason to suppress speech is absolute bullshit. Be honest. The goal is to shut down people who have views that make you uncomfortable. The idea is to have some broad definition of “extremist” that can be applied subjectively. Your hope is that the people who wield this censoring power are in your political party. My question to you is: What will you think if/when there is a regime change and your opposition now holds the censorship power you helped create?
- Comevius 4y agoWe have this thing called democracy and the rule law. https://www.principlesofdemocracy.org/law https://www.principlesofdemocracy.org/law https://book.coe.int/en/commissioner-for-human-rights/7321-pdf-the-rule-of-law-on-the-internet-and-in-the-wider-digital-world.html https://book.coe.int/en/commissioner-for-human-rights/7321-p... "What will you think if/when there is a regime change and your opposition now holds the censorship power" By this logic we should defund the police and all militaries as well. The point is to use them responsibly for the common good, not to not have them when you need them. There is no free society without it having the means to enforce laws.
