Tbf authoritarianism is very efficient. No gridlock when the dictator or king says what we're doing. Probably even appeals to a surprising amount of people. Think about it: One person at the helm, the whole system inherits their traits. So like-minded people will prosper in this system (at the cost of those who think differently). Problem is, few really care about dissenters as long as they're not in the way to the in-groups' prosperity.
In more frustrated moments everyone thinks "if {politician} would just disappear it would be so convenient for everyone else" then gets uncomfortable at the implications. Which they should, because that's the seed of murder and chaos, but nonetheless they do.
