Fuel is essential to get a car moving forward. For people that’s motivation, and if doing “meta work” keeps engagement topped up and away from burn out, it’s absolutely just as justified as “actual work”. Natural tech debt build up in codebases as part of usual development process gets a fair amount of attention, but we don’t seem to address the “debt” build up on each developers’ mind over time as they notice things that they’d like to tune. It’s important to empty that cache every now and then :)
