- BlackLotus89 4y agoHaving correctly configured swap/zram/zswap and a correctly working oom-daemon can help immensely. The in-kernel oom is uhm kinda bad for most desktop use cases not usable by default. You can try playing around with these https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Improving_performance#Improving_system_responsiveness_under_low-memory_conditions https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Improving_performance#Impro... most linux distributions come with some form of this out of the box (ubuntu tries systemd-oomd with custom settings and earlyoom is enabled by default on fedora afaik). If you are lazy you can try nohangd which is nice because it warns you with a notification before taking action.
- s_ting765 4y agoFedora moved to systemd-oomd in F34. [0] Though the upcoming MGLRU [1] patches (tested on Android and ChromeOS) should significantly [2] improve the kernel's handling of memory and oom situations. - hulitu 4y agoJust do a: killall -9 'pidof firefox'; firefox
- Zardoz84 4y agoTotal Suspender makes Firefox ram usage, pretty light
- rrss 4y agoIt looks like the change is setting oom_score_adj for Firefox processes, so IIUC Firefox won’t use less memory, just direct OOM kills better.
