You may jest! The coolest “Professor” I ever had was a geologist taking time from his career of geological exploration for precious stones, minerals, or oil and gas - a field guy. He was between contracts so decided to try teaching an Intro class - Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
His life out in the world in some exotic places doing science was part Indiana Jones. Because of his class I now respect nature and want to be a good steward, but also know deep down that if the Yellowstone volcano pops off in my lifetime, well, hello handful of fentanyl!
Also the most fascinating part is when I did my report on Mt St Helen’s I found out how many animals had like a few minute head start and knew something was coming and ran for it.
Like they had a tip from the earths magnetic energy or something made them react. I recently wrote here about trusting my gut, and that was one of the examples that made me stand back and appreciate what I don’t know about energy and the universe.
Lastly, my Dad flew a C-47 in Alaska and hauled smoke jumpers on the regular. He still has utmost respect for them. I’m trying to get him to write out a day in the life from that time before he kicks the bucket. All those guys are probably dead by now.
- jamal-kumar 4y agoSo you just keep an emergency stash of apocalypse fentanyl sitting around?
- 6stringmerc 4y agoNah when things get weird I just have a plan of what to get - pretty sure the first few days will be chaos and should allow for the acquisition of whatever I desire. I have the cash and neighbors have already volunteered to loan me an AR or two of things get really hairy (trained marksman, don’t own firearms), so I mean I can get it one way or another when the time comes.
- defrost 4y agoWho's jesting? Events described are, as indicated, just the usual stuff ... somewhat more extreme days at work have been known to involve surprise!! nuclear testing followed by detention in situ, and extended debriefing by multiple TLA's from several countries. Good times. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokhran-II https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokhran-II Other 'interesting' days at work have involved being adrift in a burning boat in disputed waters with overpaid useless O&G observers whinging about pirates "rescuing" us and stealing his watch, etc. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands_dispute https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands_dispute These are the things your math & physics teachers neglect to mention when they suggest field work :-)
- 6stringmerc 4y agoYou definitely point out that reality is more wild than fiction! I remember working insurance for O&G firms that did hot tapping - you know, welding on a pressurized Natural Gas Pipeline. How that ever became a thing I dunno but they go boom a little too often for insurers.
