It feels like over optimization. The base load of my house is around 1kW which is still completely irrelevant in the scheme of how much owning the property costs. The literal cost you’re adding as well as the mental cost of having to switch things on and off all the time shouldn’t be ignored. There’s a timer on the outlets for the soldering gear though, that adds a bit of peace of mind.
- zbrozek 4y agoIn the PG&E service territory in California, that base load will run you about $5500 annually. That's more than the property tax on my townhouse.
- sokoloff 4y agoYou guys are over $0.60/kWh?! That’s 3x what we’re paying in MA (known for “not cheap” electricity). That would make an EV much less attractive as well.
- brnt 4y agoIs heating/hot water in that 1.5kW?
- RL_Quine 4y agoHeating and hot water is gas, cooling is electric.
- brnt 4y agoAmazing. That's about a factor 4 more than average total consumption around here. Which I am beating by almost a factor 2.
- RL_Quine 4y agoI’m not sure how people run such low power usages honestly. My desktop is about 700W when playing games alone.
- brnt 4y agoIt's the obvious, but we turn things off/disconnect when not in use, and we buy the most power efficient versions of devices whenever we replace anything. My desktop with its Titan Xp is the exception to the rule, but it isn't on much these days.
- maccard 4y agoThays 50x the base load of my house, and would cost thousands a year to run idle. With current costs in the UK, close to $10,000

- zbrozek 4y agoYou don't have a refrigerator?
- maccard 4y agoI have a fridge freezer, and last time the compressor kicked in my kill-a-watt meter says it used about 400w for about 5 minutes. It does that maybe 2-3 times a day.
- zbrozek 4y agoI'd love to get something that efficient. What model is it?
- maccard 4y agoCame with the house, but it's a Samsung that looks vaguely something like this [0], at a guess bought in 2019 as that's when the previous owners replaced the kitchen.
