Highly suspect.
I've been living in Japan for over 5 years. Never heard of this. I've even tried to casually mention while chatting with some of Japanese people I know about eating insects and they were all disgusted by it.
- culi 4y ago80% of modern countries still practice entomophagy. It seems likely that being grossed out by eating insects is a Western cultural export It wasn't too long that people saw eating lobsters as if they were eating cockroaches. Likely tastes similar too
- skhr0680 4y agoWasps are new to me too, but grasshoppers cooked in soy sauce and sugar are speciality of Nagano
- blargey 4y agoI imagine it’s like “The US tradition of eating bull testes”. It took me a lot longer than 5 years before I heard about that one, and I suspect you’d get a similar reaction offering those “oysters” to a random US citizen without couching it in euphemism.
- bojo 4y agoLived over there for 12 years and watched one of their standard TV documentaries about mixing wasps into rice and eating it. I was a bit surprised and asked my Japanese friends about it, and naturally they were disgusted, but were aware of the specific prefecture with that particular eating culture.
