This outrage against the invasion of our privacy is good. I just wish Americans would consistently extend this to US BigTech too and feel the same level of outrage. TikTok is not doing anything different than what Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon do. Over the last 2 decades, Windows, macOS, ios and Android have been harvesting every bit of our personal information from our devices - the file name / metadata of every file you create on your system is transferred to their servers (either as part of their "cloud" feature or under the terms of their malware detection system), the OS continously monitors what applications you run and when you run it and informs on you, your geographic location is sent every time you start your OS and repeatedly when you connect to the internet, every time you connect to any network (bluetooth, wifi, LAN, internet etc.) the OS relays this information to their creator along with the devices involved, and so on ...
I am not saying this is a valid excuse to condone TikTok's privacy abuses in any manner. Just that we shouldn't lose focus that these types of abuses are becoming more and more common, and TikTok is just another symptom of it. The solution is not banning TikTok or some other company tomorrow, but a strong privacy preserving legislation to cover BigTech and future startups (irrespective of their origin country). This is a human rights issue - not a chinese or US BigTech one.

- jeroenhd 4y agoTheir ToS mention collecting file names but not necessarily uploading them to the cloud. They may be pseudonymised or hashed before uploading or they may not be uploaded at all.
