    I buy cheap wines because expensive wines don't taste any better.

    Wine gets a lot of "marketing" around it before you've had it, in order to mark up the prices. As consumers you're conditioned to expect to pay high prices for certain metadata about the wine. The question should be, in a double blind glass of wine, how do you know what it's worth?
