One of the deleted scenes from the movies shows Al Pacino’s character advising his henchman to ensure that the “dowry is large” at one his niece’s wedding. His niece and her boyfriend come to Pacino to seek his blessing on their marriage/relationship.
That scene instantly made me realize how much of the “culture” presented in the movie is accurately reflective of so many patriarchal cultures all over the world.
I mean, that is _literally_ how many Indian families treat power structures, marriage, relationships even to this day.
As a liberal, feminist, yadda yadda, of course I don’t subscribe to those beliefs. Nor do the conservatives in India or otherwise endorse the crime. But, peel back the thin layer of dramatized fiction and you’ll find that a lot of the movie is based on obviously authentic history/culture.
It’s simultaneously scary and fascinating.
