This Artist is dominating AI-generated art. And he’s not happy about it
- knaik94 4y agoI dislike thing angle because it pushes the narrative that art is more about the style than about the message. I value are because of how it makes me feel. Original works by artists are always going to have value due to the scarcity. To me it feels like someone complaining that celebrity impersonators are cutting into their revenue. The licensing is pretty clear on what is considered derivative and what is not. From my experience in research in this field, my understanding is the copyright extends to the original dataset, not the trained weights. The weights are considered novel enough to get my own copyright attached. The limit of that needs to be discussed legally if better weights become publicly available, but I don't see it making a meaningful impact currently. As of right now the generated artwork is fairly generic without the understanding needed to be considered creative. People can use creative prompts to "prompt engineer" but publicly released weights fail to generate text correctly. I don't see a marketing department replacing their team of graphic designers anytime soon. I don't see public facing companies replacing a company logo with an AI generated one, ever. It's for the same reason AI won't replace doctors as a primary diagnostic tool for any serious diseases. A person who uses a tool to create art is still an artist. The barrier of entry being lower doesn't change that.
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoRutkowski should be jumping with joy. His originals are about to explode in value. The derivative AI images can be created by the truckload and will have little value but his originals are rare. So collectors will want them just because they can brag that they have an original Rutkowski. This in addition to his exponential increase in popularity will lead to him becoming very rich from his work. Fighting AI will lead no where specially since he has no claim over the derivative images. Even if he's successful in removing his originals from the training set the AI derivatives will take the place of his originals. It's too late. He should embrace the lottery he just hit.
