The problem is that AMD GPUs basically don't work. Intel also has issues. ML is big, and that's NVidia's game.
Many years ago, Matrox had a nice niche. Their cards were stable, reliable, and open-source. They weren't the fastest, but they were widely used for CAD, workstation, and business work. I'd like something like that today. I'm surprised Intel can't pull it off.
- Night_Thastus 4y agoDefine "Basically don't work"? They've been competing at the top end with Nvidia for at least the last couple generations. It was a toss up between things like the 3080 and 6800XT for the same price. They've been on a hell of a roll for awhile now.
- WaxProlix 4y agoYeah, what? I've been pretty happy with my 6900xt. ML workloads are not as good without Nvidia branded stuff, but games run great and with lower power draw/heat than competition.
- jterrys 4y agoRyzen 5900x / RX 6900xt here Life's pretty good in Linux land too. Around the launch of the 6000 series AMD pushed a bunch of good stuff in the kernel. With Vulkan being the big boy in town I can practically play any game I want sans shooters, and that's because of anticheat.
- hotcoffeebear 4y agoHow is ROCm playing out? I am eying new GPU, especially for stable diffusion, very curious about this. As i see, AMd is loaded with vram but lacks cuda-thingies, is it right?

- Jweb_Guru 4y agoModern AMD GPUs are fantastic, and I would recommend them over NVIDIA cards for most people. I'm not really sure where you're getting this from.
- westmeal 4y agoDude what? Ok sure older and cards were hot garbage but not nowadays
- unethical_ban 4y agoThe only reason I switched to team Green was the noise reduction for microphone. My 5700XT worked just fine.
- Zardoz84 4y agoYou know that you not need. NVIDIA card to using a AI noise filter ? RRNoise does the same thing and not need a Nvidia GPU to work. A happy user of RRNoise on Linux with an AMD GPU
- unethical_ban 4y agoAh, no I didn't. Well, to be honest the 3070 is twice the performance of the 5700X so I'm not going to get upset. But that's good to know for the future.
- antisthenes 4y agoIntel did pull it off. Which company did you think shipped billions of chips with integrated graphics in the 2010-2017 era, before Ryzen? Their iGPUs weren't amazing, but they were good enough to be used in business/office PCs across the world.
- x1ph0z 4y agoHave you bought an amd gpu in the last decade? They don’t beat nvidias top cards but they perform well. Xbox/PS4 use amd hardware and so does the steam deck. I have no idea why this comment was even made?? Have you compared their open source driver to nvidias? Night and day difference.
