- codefreeordie 4y agoFrom their analysis, the cause of the cliff is explicitly deaths due to drug overdose.
- jfengel 4y agoThe CDC disagrees: "The declines in life expectancy since 2019 are largely driven by the pandemic. COVID-19 deaths contributed to nearly three-fourths or 74% of the decline from 2019 to 2020 and 50% of the decline from 2020 to 2021. " https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2022/20220831.htm https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2022/... Drug overdoses were significant, but much less than COVID: "An estimated 16% of the decline in life expectancy from 2020 to 2021 can be attributed to increases in deaths from accidents/unintentional injuries. Drug overdose deaths account for nearly half of all unintentional injury deaths."
- retrac 4y agoYes, for 2020 to 2021. But American life expectancy has been on the decline for about 10 years now, and the decline was already accelerating before COVID-19 hit. This is visible on the charts in the article. Drug overdoses do account for much of the decline from 2010 to now.
- PeterStuer 4y agoObesity is still number one by a large margin according to the article, -1.4y vs -1y for opioids.

- avmich 4y agoI'm curious, did we ever have a situation before in history when a vaccine led to a "noticeably large" decrease in life expectation?
