How has the technology progressed over the past decades?
I know little, but I’m assuming modular synths are analogue in nature, have new ideas been invented? Higher quality components now available?
- zardo 4y agoI think signaling between modules is always analog, but the modules themselves may be analog or digital.
- smoldesu 4y agoSort of. The signal standard (at least CV and 1v/octave) has remained largely the same, and the rackmount form factor is still the go-to. Beyond that... I'd say the past 10 years were actually the golden age of modular synthesis. The biggest revolution has been watching digital components roll in - contributions by Mutable Instruments and Make Noise have completely changed the modular game, if not music as a whole. Plaits, Clouds and Braids are all instant-classic modules that found their way into a lot of popular music. Make Noise's Morphagene further pushed the digital buffer manipulation barrier, with their René inspiring a variety of novel input modules. That's only touching on two of the hundreds of manufacturers that have cropped up over the past few years. Modular is back into it's waning period, but it's hard to complain when there are so many new toys to play with...
