Linus Torvalds: Rust may make it into the next Linux kernel after all
- Havoc 4y agoReally hoping it happens because I think it'll have positive effects on engagement as well. Nothing wrong with C, but learning rust is way cooler right now. Kernel catching a bit of that wind in its sail wouldn't be a bad thing
- mbStavola 4y agoWhile the focus of many will be on memory safety (which is important for sure), I think the idea that adding Rust as a second language to make the kernel more approachable for a new generation of developers is very compelling. It's a very "skate to where the puck is going, not where it is" mindset.
- mustache_kimono 4y agoHarumph. > Torvalds also told me in our interview that another reason he wants to see Rust in the kernel is to encourage new developers to start working on the kernel. "Rust is one of those things that I think might bring in new faces," he said, and, "We're getting old and gray." And, wow, what happened to Linus. Love it.
- phendrenad2 4y agoWait, that's still happening? This is awesome! I thought rust in the kernel was abandonware.
- rascul 4y agoPerhaps you missed it, two days ago there was a thread (currently 195 comments), "A pair of Linux kernel modules using Rust". https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32822082 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32822082
