Nethack, Omega... Angband... Those games are so deep. A true evolutionary sweet spot. I was in love/addiction for a long time.
Naturally I have given much thought to what the next step might be.
No, not prettier pictures, realtime or 3d. All those newfangled mmorpgs took the obvious, and wrong, turn.
Sometimes I think that a different tesselation (than square grid. Something with more directions). And variable size icons.
Would that detract?
- anthk 4y agoWith BSD games (specially ATC, Tetris, Trek, Adventure and others) you can have fun with very little. Add Slashem and IF games and you can play with a and with a shitty SVGA card. On "graphical" games, Shadowrun for the Genesis with the 2058 patch (ips.pl it's your friend) it's the only "modern" game I play. And yet Shadowrun pales against Nethack/Slashem's interactivy between monsters, objects, statuses and the world.
- godshatter 4y agoI think there are some modern rogue-likes that use hex layouts rather than square grids. I'm not sure if there is anything more creative than that, but I would be surprised if there weren't. There is a sub-culture out there who are making more modern versions of the traditional rogue-likes. See the r/roguelikedev subreddit for a lot of interesting info on this.
