I completely agree that there's no rush to get a final count of votes. It's really hard to invisibly corrupt the thousands of people involved in counting. Software might be visible so it can be audited by whomever, but then is it even the same software as what's on the machine? You become reliant on a small number of technicians to operate the system, and a small number of people is much easier to corrupt.
I find it hard to believe in total democracy. Sure, there's probably a small number of issues you would pay close attention to, but most people would be like "the internet freedom act?, heck yes I like internet freedom". Or, worse, they could just sell their votes, putting a minority of informed voters against a majority of bots that can now make legally binding decisions. Say what you will about representative democracy, but at least those people have to vote visibly and might get called to account for anything the vote for (by being voted out themselves).
