Is This the Future of Journalism?
- lifeisstillgood 4y agoGergley seems to be carving out a small niche, which is fine. It seems to work for him and is very of-the-moment. But I am wondering what is journalism. We know what it used to look like, but that was wrapped up with control of the limited the distribution channel and so on. I think that journalism's role might be more about reliable public data labelling. Just as a CNN needs good training data, so does what we might call the "metamind" of society. Feed propaganda and bad data into society and it makes inaccurate judgements. Label data correctly, and we can fix things. Also if Inam right there is a science in finding what parts of society look like CNN and finding how to adjust the feedback loops - like MadMen and science
- gsatic 4y agoIt's a good analogy. Journos feel similar to Google bots..finding and adding pages to the index. Basically surfacing new info. One thing tho, even with good data labeling Learning can take its own sweet time. It depends how fast your machine is, and Societies processing speeds are very slow. Good journalism often feels quite useless thanks to that limitation.
- lifeisstillgood 4y agoWell previously the (social) architecture was hub and spoke (we all read the same newspapers to get the new updateable fact) or each individual neutron had contact only with its neighbours. Social media seems to be hub and spoke but going viral seems to be like a mass broadcast mechanism. My hope for democracy is that truth will be more likely to go viral than lies. I have issues with that last sentence
