So we have:
M2 on N5P
A16 on N4
M3/A17 on N3E
> The U.S. tech giant will be the first to use TSMC's first generation of 3-nm technology, using it for some of its upcoming iPads, Nikkei Asia reported earlier.
What chip would those iPads use then? There are iPads with A and with M processors. I assume N3 is more expensive than N4 and so it would make more sense to have it in an iPad Pro with M processor. But it can't be M2 because we already have that chip and it's N5P. Would that be another hint at M2 Pro/Max/Ultra/Extreme chips on N3 and mean an iPad with M2 Pro? The latter seem a bit unlikely to me. The alternative could be an A16X but I don't see why Apple would do this. TSMC said N3E follows one year after N3 and so would come at the end of 2023. That would be in line with Apples 1.5 year upgrade cycle for M processors but it would be too late for the A17 unless Apple would move away from a September release. Really not sure how much credibility to give this Nikkei report.
Now with the A16 out, we could also see M2 Pro on N4. I believe it could make sense for Apple to differentiate the Pro/Max/... M chips from the standard M ones like they did with the iPhone 14 lineup.
Personally I still hope for M2 Pro on N3 in October.
