People in the western societies will do anything to avoid wearing masks. That includes pushing and taking vaccines that weren’t fully tested. Unlike the latest flavor of mRNA vaccine, masks do not lose efficacy against new variants within a few months. If you wear an n95 rated mask or higher, you will have 95% efficacy or higher
- pas 4y agomasks work, but their end-to-end efficacy is very low, because people would have to wear them perfectly. there's no point to wearing masks if you go to places where you take it off. people did exactly that and everyone was pikachu surprised that the pandemic was still alive and well.
- Workaccount2 4y agoOr touch them at all. People say "I always wear N95 for maximum effect" But then they were the same mask for a week and play with it/adjust it 100 times a day.
- chaostheory 4y agoThat’s not true. Even an imperfectly worn N95 is more effective than a cloth mask or nothing at all. The n95 mask is high intuitive unless you have a large beard (ie. you just have to ensure it fits your nose bridge area and chin area properly). I would wager that it still has better efficacy than an mRNA vaccine even when improperly worn Thank you for helping making my point
- pas 4y agogood wager (though a but underspecified, efficacy of preventing spread, illness, hospitalization, or death?) as far as I know the numbers are here and show otherwise https://www.healthline.com/health-news/in-the-era-of-omicron-mask-mandates-arent-working-vaccines-are https://www.healthline.com/health-news/in-the-era-of-omicron... https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/31/briefing/masks-mandates-us-covid.html https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/31/briefing/masks-mandates-u... of course for personal health choices it's best to go for a P100 respirator and getting the vaccine
- chaostheory 4y agoMask mandates don’t work for several reasons: 1. People don’t obey them 2. People use garbage cloth or surgical masks that have poor efficacy. Those masks at best are only effective in partially protecting others if you’re sick, but not vice versa. 3. For the reasons stated above, these studies don’t disprove the efficacy of n95 or higher rated masks Unlike cloth masks, n95s and higher rated masks have much better efficacy and I have yet to see a study that either focuses on them or differentiates them from near useless masks. A better study would focus on hospitals and their workers’ use of different types of masks. The current studies just help prove my point. Hating masks is something people on both sides of the political spectrum can agree on in the West
- pas 4y agoI had masks at home well before COVID stuck, mostly for protection against dust and whatnot. Saw how HongKong took desinfection quite seriously, saw how SARS went down. And still, as long as we don't magically come up with a way to educate millions of people effectively about masks, mask mandates are a wash. (Their best benefit is that anyone who gives a shit does not look like an outlier.)
- chaostheory 4y agoFor the record, I’m not pushing for mandates. They will fail. I’m just saying that n95 masks are highly effective at preventing the transmission of airborne illnesses such as COVID regardless of whether anyone else wears a mask, along with my observation that the West detests masks ie. I’m not recommending a solution. I’m lamenting the stupid and illogical behavior of people, even educated ones
