Last time I've posted something about mRNA on Hackernews, it reached page 1 in about 2h and then got flagged immediately. HN is not a good place for mRNA discussions.
- wil421 4y agoWas it from a legitimate source?
- Aldipower 4y agoIt was from "The Lancet", so I think, yes?!
- forgingahead 4y agoYou mean like a Pfizer press release? I'm being sarcastic but I don't think downvoting because of "source" is a good habit for HNers to have - there are far more diverse views and interesting points being made outside of the mainstream narrative, and if the goal is to have discussion with an intelligent community, "source" is a pretty weak reason to not have that discussion.
- nostromo 4y agoYesterday I noticed that happened to a reputable paper that recommends against boosters for young people. Posted, front page, flagged, dead… https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32820934 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32820934
- Aldipower 4y agoYes! Exactly this behavior. There seems to be some hidden rules, what is allowed and what isn't. Very sad. This is suppressing good discussion and forming of own opinions.
- TechBro8615 4y agoIt's not some hidden rule, it's just a story that gets flagged by a lot of people. And I can understand that. This discussion is boring and predictable. We've been talking in circles for almost two years.
- Aldipower 4y agoTo be clear, it wasn't flagged by the people. It got flagged and removed by a mod, after it hit the front page. And how do you know about the story, when you couldn't read what I've submitted?
- TechBro8615 4y agoHow do you know it got flagged by a mod? Users with 500+ karma can flag posts, and if enough of them do that, then it automatically drops off the page. No moderator action is required.
- Aldipower 4y agoMaybe you're right and it was "down flagged". It's just because it was so quickly flagged, it could barely last 2 minutes on the front page. In contrast it was constantly upvoted before from other users, before it reached the front page. Why reached it the front page then, just to be immediately flagged?
- Izkata 4y agoFlags and votes don't counteract each other, they're separate axes. The opposite to a flag is "vouch". I'd just assume a separate set of users.
- zionic 4y agoHN moderation has seriously diminished the value of this site to me, putting it nicely.

- noelsusman 4y agoFrankly, HN is not a good place for any discussions outside of the technical elements of software engineering.
