New study finds: The climate getting warmer may be fuelling online hate speech
- giantg2 4y agoIs it possible that more people are just online or that they're spending more time online? It seems like those temperatures would be when it's more likely to be inside if the weather isn't great.
- tunap 4y ago"To the extent that we are the victims of unchecked unconscious drives, to that extent we may be vulnerable to mental manipulation. And although there is a horrifying fascination in the idea that our mental resistance is relatively weak, that the very quality which distinguishes one man from another - the individual "I" can be profoundly altered by psychological pressures, such transformations are merely extremes of a process we find operating in normal life. Through systematized suggestion, subtle propaganda, and more overt mass hypnosis, the human mind in its expressions is changed daily in any society." -Merloo Rape Of The Mind 1956
- tonetheman 4y agoIt could be that all of the deniers who have staked so much on being correct are lashing out as it plays out that they were wrong?
- h2odragon 4y agoMight a causes also be broader definitions of "hate speech", and a desire to find more of it? It's "hate speech" now to observe that biology seems to strongly prefer to produce one of two genders. It can be hate speech to suggest that ineffective vaccines should not have been required in as many situations as they were. There heat and hate here but little sense: https://hotair.com/john-s-2/2022/09/12/auto-draft-61-n496046 https://hotair.com/john-s-2/2022/09/12/auto-draft-61-n496046 ... Can we blame that on the climate? Or should we hold the individual accountable for their silly behavior?
- moistly 4y agoOnline aggression has two components: * Boorish jerks, conspiracy twits, science and logic illiterates, and moralizing hypocrites. People who spend a lot of their in-real-life lives expending everyone else’s patience, tolerance, and benevolence. Good-will vampires. Dissatisfied assholes who make it everyone else’s problem. * People who have had enough of the former. Their tolerance reserves are fully tapped out. They’re tired of having to re-explain reality to the obstinately uninformed. Tired of turning the other cheek when a stranger is offensive. Angered that their children’s education, health, and safety is being compromised. Fed up with politely “agreeing to disagree” and accepting the harm. Amd so the two groups fight like cats tied in a burlap sack and beat with a stick. You can consider the stick, in this scenario, to be the likes of privateers like Cambridge Analytica, government and corporate media agencies, and other “influencers”. A third component, I suppose: I doubt things would be so bad if deliberate instigation & disinformation were not in play. You’ll draw your own conclusions about which people/uncles/accounts belong to one or the other group.
