From boom to gloom: Tech recruiters struggle to find work
- fxtentacle 4y agoI believe only shady recruiters who pray on inexperienced candidates are struggling to find work. But this will only weed out the bad apples, which is good. Here's a recent exchange I had with a recruiter. He messaged me out of the blue: "I am contacting you regarding a professional opportunity for a CTO position. If you are interested in this offer and would like to have more details, please sign the attached NDA." Me: "Can you disclose the salary range (excl. equity)?" Him: "This position is highly confidential and almost everything about this company - including name, job title, and salary - is priviledged." Sadly, this is pretty much representative of the average quality of recruiters that contact me. They probably just want to add my CV to their ERM so that they can brag about their large pool of applicants. And I won't miss those (bad) recruiters when they are gone. On the other hand, there's recruiters who I talked to before, they know my preferences, and they don't waste my time. So they'll be like: "$150k to $250k, Senior AI Researcher, company X (healthcare, speech recog). Should I suggest you for a call?" And I'm happy to choose which introductory calls I might enjoy. And those (good) recruiters seem to still have A LOT more job openings than candidates. I also heard that self-service recruiting platforms like Taledo are still doing well. Again, my guess would be that that's because their use is driven by potential candidates, as opposed to (bad) recruiters pushing a slightly unrelated offer onto the candidate.
- floppiplopp 4y agoWill some of those parasites finally do some real work? Probably, but most will go on to find some other useless annoying bullshit to bother people with. The things I've seen and experienced with recruiters... man, that's a bullshit profession that really should die out for good.
- bloqs 4y agoRecruiters make everyones life easier. The barriers for entry are low so theres a lot of chaff, but they are a robust buffer, providing a solution to introverts not really wanting to put themselves out there. Its highly competitive and challenging work.
