Given the Antarctic is fairly geo-politically stable,
I can see all the benefits of a combined data-centre/research-station site.
- dredmorbius 4y agoPragmatically, ambient temperature is only one factor. Sweden is close to a large fraction of the Internet-using population of highest interest to advertisers (like it or not, and I don't, the most salient interest faction driving present siting and architectural considerations). Antarctica somewhat less so, and 600+ ms latency matters.
- fomine3 4y agoHigh latency could be acceptable for long running task like deep learning training. Still maintenance cost for far remote site would be a blocker. I wonder wind power generation stable enough http://www.antarcticstation.org/station/renewable_energies http://www.antarcticstation.org/station/renewable_energies
- Trouble_007 4y agoLarge scale power production would be an interesting problem to solve, I would expect wind, solar and perhaps wave, geothermal.
- Trouble_007 4y ago>Sweden is close to a large fraction of the Internet-using population True, and currently close to unrest.
- dredmorbius 4y agoThose characteristics are rather correlated.
