Margaret Mead’s call for less “orthodox” grantmaking
- derbOac 4y agoIt's frustrating how much society can lead to self-perpetuating cycles due to expectations of others. Not always, but it can act in powerful ways. Typecasting of actors and actresses is a good concrete example of this in one creative domain, but there are many more powerful examples. It's my own issues that are coloring my interpretation of the piece but it struck me how much of the discussion was about developing a shared set of what amounts to very simple stereotypes in the end. Some of those stereotypes might have been true, but the process itself seems ignorant at some level. Mead was correct to point out the flaws in one set of biases, but I can't help but wonder if they were just replaced by others.
