In America you can't have the same city supporting 4+ ton SUVs and trucks purposely designed to not see in front of the hood, with bikes.
You can't just put unprotected, broken, non-contiguous bike lanes next to traffic and say "there I fixed it".
People don't want to bike around in full defense mode paranoid of everyone casually killing them, incredibly stressful.
- c0nfused 4y agoIt's have been trying out doing cargo bike pick up for one of my kids from school and I agree. For most people, having someone pass you with less than foot clearance while speeding is the end of the experiment. That said, parking protected bike lanes are a huge boon to bike use. Push for them in your town and people will use the bike lane. There's a group of highschool kids who are doing a bike pool on my morning ride who have showed up now that there is a protected bike lane. The hood height thing is honestly insane. I am over 6 feet high and cannot see over them while standing let alone driving or biking. They seem actually designed as a deniable way to hurt people.
- svachalek 4y agoI've been hit on a bike by cars twice, both times in broad daylight in a bike lane. The second time was when I was just done with that. Drivers just aren't looking for you at all. Thinking about riding a bike in conditions where they might actually have some trouble seeing me is pretty terrifying.
