The malls in my area that have died over the last 20 years all share 1 thing in common... violence. I will not go to a mall that has 6 shootings a year.

- jafo 4y agoThe mall near where I grew up suffered from that problem 50 years ago, and was shut down by the late 1970s...
- tenebrisalietum 4y agoAnd was finally demolished in 2012. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Square_Mall https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Square_Mall
- jafo 4y agoI'd argue it was actually demolished in 1980[1]. [1]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIdGxR-aU6o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIdGxR-aU6o
- GenerocUsername 4y agoI didn't want to assume Chicago or Detroit, but wiki says Dixie mall is in Chicago. Timeline matches my preconceived ideas.
- bluedino 4y agoWe had way more violence at malls in the 90's when malls were far more popular.

- bombcar 4y ago> I will not go to a mall that has 6 shootings a year. Agreed, a mall needs to be up around 12 shootings a year to even be considered these days.

- kube-system 4y agoI suspect violence is not the cause of the demise of those malls, but one of many symptoms of the root cause. Malls generally have retailers that are more expensive than big box or strip mall alternatives. Lower income neighborhoods have both more violence and more residents with a preference for value pricing.
