I always hear about Italy's old population but wow, that's a gigantic difference between 0-20 year olds and 45-65 year olds. Their social security system has to collapse, or be dramatically modified, at some point in the next 30 years, right?
- seydor 4y agoThe newer geneerations are aware of that but when it comes to social security they will actually have the upper hand: older people will need them. The precipitous drop in fertility rates happened in the '80s. Old people put a strain on the current youth, but in the future things will be more even. And btw , most countries will go through this bottleneck
- jobs_throwaway 4y agothe question then becomes: how do the young make use of the fact that older people need them? Forced requisition of assets? Wealth taxes on the elderly? Something else?
- seydor 4y agoincreased wages which make affordable things that are currenty very unaffordable, like housing. We are already seeing it as part of the "great resignation"
- jmoak3 4y agoYup, expect to hear about inflation for a long time! A wealthy older person will not stay wealthy for long when minor repairs to their home cost a magnitude more than circa-2019.
