- withinboredom 4y agoIf I turn off the hot water here, I’ll freeze to death in a few weeks or months. I don’t have a fireplace, and my house is heated by hot water. The temperature gets far colder for far longer than Arizona (used to live there, now live in the EU).
- rosnd 4y agoDo you not have clothes? Can you not sleep under a heated blanket? Why would you freeze to death?
- withinboredom 4y agoI imagine there is a reason we built houses with fire places. Also, I am sure that I’d need a shower at some point to join society.
- rosnd 4y ago>I imagine there is a reason we built houses with fire places. Yes, comfort. > Also, I am sure that I’d need a shower at some point to join society. It's perfectly safe to take a shower using cold water.
- withinboredom 4y agoSo all the people who die in the winter from exposure due to power failure in their homes are “just doing it wrong?” I can see that, you have to be pretty prepared to live below freezing for an extended period of time: eat lots of calories, avoid sweating, lots of clothing, etc. and most people don’t know any of that unless they’ve lived in the elements (like you and I, apparently). Convincing my family to live like that and training them to survive below-freezing temps inside their own house which is capable of keeping them warm with the push of a button … very unlikely.
- walthamstow 4y agoWhat's a typical daytime average temp in winter AZ? This is me trying to understand the temp of the cold water tap (faucet)
- TEP_Kim_Il_Sung 4y agoSpent two winters in AZ. Dew freezes at night in the high desert, and melts at noon, except in parts not touched by sunlight, or sufficiently insulated (i.e. tufts of grass, bushes) It gets hot enough to be unbareably hot at noon, in that pullover you put on at night so as not to freeze to death. I reckon it would be a great place to erect an ancient Persian ice house, Yakhchal. https://www.maxfordham.com/research-innovation/the-physics-of-freezing-at-the-iranian-yakhchal/ https://www.maxfordham.com/research-innovation/the-physics-o...
- UncleEntity 4y agoThe water was really cold in the morning but the hot water heater was outside so would warm up enough to be somewhat bearable in the afternoon/evening. Not taking leisurely showers but not freezing to death. Summer time it was impossible to take a cold shower which is where the problem came in, I’d save up enough to get the gas turned back on but the weather would warm up and I’d never get around to it before the money got spent on something else.
