I started using databases a lot at a time when I was coding in Java. I would search for SQL tricks that would simplify my Java, so RETURNING was one of the first things I used heavily. Soon I discovered window functions so that I could, for instance, get my data back with an extra column with the total number of rows, or the data in the first and last rows, and so on. These little things had a large impact on the number of lines of Java that I had to write.
